    Description

The following is part of a summation of an autobiography by Hempel written in 1977:
"Arno Walter Hempel, 1889-1983, was born in Dresden, Germany, and immigrated to the US in 1923, his wife to follow the following year.  Arno, at age 14, began an apprenticeship to learn the arts of modeling, designing and wood carving.  At 18 he applied for his journeyman diploma and became a member of the Modeling and Woodcarvers Union in Dresden.  Desiring to be a fine artist he attended evening classes at the King art School, and after WWI he opened his own studio.
In America Hempel was engaged in the creation of carvings at the Joseph Ernest Meyer House in Dyer, Indiana, creating anything from Gargoyles to rosettes on door frames. He recognized and was part of the American Arts/Arts & Crafts Movement. He showed his work in exhibits at the Art Institute of Chicago, and many other exhibits in Chicago and Illinois. He was a member of the Palette and Chisel society in both Chicago and Milwaukee.  He created a sculpture for the Black Forest Village in the 1933 Chicago World's Fair, and exhibited in the Dallas' Texas Centennial Exposition of 1936, and at the New York World's Fair of 1939. He created contract work for for Marshall Field's including modelings and carvings for the initial interest in and construction of Disneyland (Marshall Field helped to market early interest in Disneyland).  His carvings became plaster medallions fronting many external facades on the Wrigley Building in Chicago, and similar works for the University of Chicago.
in 1947 Arno and his wife moved to Lake Geneva, WI, so he could begin work with a local pottery company.  There he was active with the Geneva Lakes Art Foundation and sought out other work as a freelance artist. In his later retirement years he continued to work on smaller sculptures, watercolors, pencil and charcoal and oils on canvas."
This watercolor of a dog, perhaps a Lhasa apso, is signed and dated "1948", in the lower right facing corner. The image measures 10" X x 9" H, in a the original mat that measures 15" x 15".  Note the back has several pieces of tape which can be cut to remove the painting and remat or fame it.  The ptg. is in fine condition, the colors strong, the paper clean.  Check out my OTHER ITEMS/FOR A FEW MORE ARNO HEMPEL ITEMS and other WI related art.
