Fair warning: I am soon starting to collect again and this is one which I would add to my personal collection, so I will probably take it off the market before long. It's a "last chance" situation.
WHAT IS GREAT ABOUT IT: ...an early masterpiece in the form of a very large old pin which also has a runner to use it as a bolo. I'd use one of the tube pendant converters that fit over the pin, to use it as a pendant if you would like to wear it as a pendant. The tie and tips were missing when I got it but the great Michael Schmaltz created tips for it, all hand made, hand stamped and with great weight, and he added the tie and tips for me and also tightened the stones, so it's entirely secure and restored to its original purpose of being a bolo. It can still be used as a pin if the tie and tips are removed. It's versatile and of uniquely exceptional beauty. The inlay work and the silver leaf work too, work perfectly with the organic quality of the natural coral and it is one of the most gorgeous pieces Dan Simplicio ever made. It is a pure garden of delight. And there's nothing like it. Dan Simplicio did do inlay work over the years but never anything like this. If it is a collaboration it would be Lambert Homer Sr, but it probably was all of it made by Dan Simplicio and probably dates to as early as the 1930's to 1940's, as there are organic pieces by him in the C. G. Wallace catalog dating to the 1930s. This piece is one of my most favorite pieces; it's spectacular. I don't think there's anything like it on earth. It's heavenly.
BACKGROUND: Dan Simplicio's work is in the C.G.Wallace catalog, and every important collection, gallery and museum. Dan Simplicio was one of C. G. Wallace's favorite smiths. He was versatile and prolific. His work was prominently featured in the 1975 Sotheby's auction of the C. G. Wallace collection. Truly a great master, his work commands top prices. Work of his is in the permanent collection of the Heard Museum in Phoenix and other museums. Dan Simplicio is credited for having been the first to use natural nuggets in his work. He was vastly talented and worked in many techniques and styles over the years; he was brilliantly creative and experimented with many styles and forms. He is one of the most important Zuni artists from the CG Wallace period and his naturalistic free form style of work has become one hallmark of that era. This piece is prototypical of his very best work and is a unique and exquisite example.
CONDITION: excellent wearable, vintage, collectible. a gorgeous and unique early example by one of Zuni's historically great silversmiths
MEASUREMENTS:
• dimensions 3-3/4" wide and 2-1/2" high
• weight 45.37grams
• pin mechanism works fine but now that it's a bolo, which was the original intent,
you'd
have to remove the tie and tips if you wanted to use it as a pin.
• tie, end to end with tips 38"
• tips height 1-5/8"
• unsigned which is usual for those times but it was with certainty made by Dan Simplicio, Zuni
• the metal is unmarked which is usual for that period, but it's at least coin silver at .900 or sterling at .925
SUMMARY: this is one of the most important and fabulous early pieces by the great master silversmith, Dan Simplicio. It's sculptural in that it looks fabulous and very different from every angle. The organic and naturalistic style of this piece is very important as representative of his contribution to an entire era. This is simply exquisite and represents perfection of aesthetic beauty. It is perfect for the start or the end of any collection.
The movement, the color play, every element is perfection. And it is entirely unique; his creativity was boundless and he never made another masterpiece anything like this unique work of art!
