    Description
    The
Fernwood, Columbia & Gulf Railroad Company
    (FC&G) was a
    Mississippi short line
. Organized in 1906 as the
    Fernwood & Gulf Railroad
    (F&G), the narrow-gauge line was
owned by and served one of the South's largest lumber mills
    at Fernwood, Mississippi. It
connected with the New Orleans Great Northern Railroad
    (NOGN, later, part of the
    Illinois Central
    ). The
narrow-gauge line was replaced with a standard gauge line in 1910
as operations grew. After obtaining operating rights from the NOGN, the F
&G extended its operations to Columbia, Mississippi and was renamed the FC&G
    . In 1972, the FC&G
became a part of the newly-formed Illinois Central Gulf Railroad
    (ICG), which
    abandoned most of the line
    shortly thereafter.
    The FC&G
